The tells of an invented employer

• The company isn’t on file in the state’s business registry.
• The “office” address is a house, a vacant lot, or a mailbox store.
• The website — if there is one — was registered a few weeks ago and matches nothing else.
• There’s no independent online footprint: no listings, no reviews, no mentions.
• The phone number on the stub doesn’t match any independently published number for the company.

How to catch it

The rule is simple: never verify an employer using the contact details the applicant gave you. Find the company independently instead.

• Search the state business registry for the exact company name.
• Pull up the address on a map and street view — is it really a place of business?
• Find the company’s phone through an independent search, and compare it to the stub.
• Look for any real online trace of the business at all.
